About The Department

labThe Department of Biotechnology moved into its 10th year since its inception on July 2004. The Department was inaugurated by Dr. S. Pradhan, renowned Scientist (retired) from BARC. We began the Department with 35 students (1 Division) and presently the Department caters 210 students in the Under Graduate section (2 Divisions in each class).

From the academic year 2008-2009 the department has been recognized for M.Sc. Biotechnology. We started off our M.Sc. part I with intake capacity of 20 students, which has been increased to 30 students from the academic year 2009-2010 onwards. Currently the Postgraduate section caters 60 students.

For smooth conduct of the above mentioned classes the department has well lit, spacious and ventilated classrooms. Each of the three classrooms has comfortable seating, ample number of fans, sun-filmed windows and chalk less white board. In addition, the department has an independent lecture rooms (Audio-Visual Room) provided with a modern LCD projector, automatic Screen and computers for the Under Graduate and Post Graduate Section. In addition to this we have a separate computer lab for our Post Graduate students to conduct Bioinformatics practical.

The Department has two aesthetically built, well equipped laboratories (Laboratory – I and II) for the smooth performance of practical of Under Graduate students. All the class rooms and laboratories are provided with uninterrupted power supply through generators and invertors.

For the M.Sc. programme, the department has provision for separate Post Graduate laboratory (Laboratory – III). The laboratory has separate air-conditioned rooms provided for animal and plant tissue culture experiments. Modern equipments for these facilities are provided in the tissue culture laboratories.

For the common use of undergraduate and postgraduate students an air-conditioned, state of the art, instrumentation room is provided. This room has uninterrupted power supply through invertors. Within the undergraduate laboratory (Laboratory II) we have a preparation room with provision for sterilization of media and glass wares. All laboratories have washing area, good ventilation and are provided with exhaust fans.

Co-curricular /Extra Curricular Activities:

The Department of Biotechnology and Biotechnology Association organizes various Co-curricular and Extra Curricular activities. The department conducts Intercollegiate Science Exhibition “Vistas in Biotechnology” every year since 2007. The purpose of this exhibition is to develop scientific attitude in the young generation and providing exploratory experiences, encouraging creative thinking. In addition to this from 2013 onwards the department also conducts Intercollegiate Biotechnology Fest “Consortia” – Transforming minds and translating ideas. This gives a platform to students of Biotechnology to exchange their ideas and showcase their magnificent talents and skills. This event aims to inculcate research culture in young minds, helping them to create their own learning experiences and innovations. The department also organizes seminars and conferences. We also arrange Guest lectures for UG and PG students by eminent personalities from Research institutes and Industries. These lectures motivate the students to undergo various training programmes in research institutes and industries. We also conducts certificate course in Plant Tissue Culture and Bioinformatics since 2013-14 to provide industrial relevant skills. The department has formed the environment analysis and conservation team (EnACT) in 2014-15 to create environemtnal awarness amongst students and to contribute towards environment preservation.

As a best practice of the department we have initiated with the Student Exchage Programme where the students are provided the chance to understand the different teaching environment. We encourage our UG and PG students to take part in “Avishkar” intercollegiate research convention, organized by University of Mumbai. Our department gives the opportunity to our PG students to carry out their short term research projects (as part of their curriculum) in our lab. Our teachers guide them to complete their project. We organize industrial visits for our UG and PG students every year. During the visit we take them to various Research institutes and Industries to give practical exposure to students. Our students and teachers are motivated to participate in various seminars, workshops, conference etc.

Five Teachers in the department submitted the project proposal (minor) to UGC for funding. Three minor projects were sanctioned for the amount Rs.7,20,000 by UGC.
