On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Pillai Group of Institutions had organised an essay writing competition for the students of MES, New Panvel Campus. The topics for the essay competition were ‘Breaking the Glass Ceiling, Women Empowerment and Education, Inspiring Women – one Indian example, Women in Tech – opportunities and challenges, Unsung Women Heroes’. 15 students of Pillai College of Arts, Commerce & Science participated out of 40 students from Pillai Group of Institutions.
Women Development Cell organized a Session on “Women Self-Empowerment: The need of Contemporary Society” for girl students by Ms. Gurpreet Kaur Khalsa, Founder, Gurpreet Kaur Leadership & Development Mumbai on 23rd November, 2019. The session was to enhance self-esteem and self-confidence of the girl students.
Women Development Cell organized an Awareness Session on “Women Cancers” for the girl students and staff by Dr. Purvi Thakkar, Surgical Oncologist and Breast Surgeon, Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Parel, Mumbai and Mrs. Suman Bugal, Nurse working in Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research & Education in Cancer (ACTREC) Kharghar, Navi Mumbai on 31st July, 2019. The session was on awareness of breast and cervical cancer. 124 girl students and 6 faculty members benefited from the session.
Women Development Cell organized a ‘Free Thalassemia & Hemoglobin Check- up’ in association with Parents Association – Thalassemic Unit Trust (PATUT), Mumbai for T.Y. students (both girls & boys) on Tuesday, 30th July, 2019 in which 159 students check-up was done. The future course of treatment would be provided to the affected students free of cost by the trust once the reports are received. There were no thalassemia minor cases out of 159 students checked. 58 students out of 159 were found anemic.
Women Development Cell organized a “Poster Making Competition” on the theme “Health Deficiencies in Women in India”. The posters were displayed in Old Canteen Area on 30th July, 2019 and results were announced. The winners were Ms. Mehta Avishi (I), Ms. Krutika Vaibhav Samel (II), Mr. Mishra Shreyanshu Umakant (III), Ms. Yadav Pooja Dinesh (Consolation), Ms. Mhatre Prachi Naresh (Consolation). The winners were given trophies and certificates.
Women Development Cell of our College had organised a Competition on “Awareness on Legal Rights of Women” following the guidelines issued by National Commission for Women, Government of India on Wednesday, 19th December, 2018. 215 students participated in the competition. Ms. Zaineb Petiwala from T.Y.B.Com. won the first prize securing 83.75%, Ms. Vrinda Madhusoodanan of S.Y.B.Com. Accounting & Finance won the second prize securing 78.75%.
Ms. Somya Thakur and Ms. Neha Shambhu Jha of S.Y.B.Com. Accounting & Finance and Ms. Neha V. Ambre of T.Y.B.Com. won the third prize securing 75%.
The Women Development Cell is organising a Guest Lecture on the topic ‘Legal Aids for Women’ led by Advocate Hardik C. It is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 14th August, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. in the classroom L 302.
The Women Development Cell of University of Mumbai celebrated International Women’s Day on 21st March, 2018 at Marathi Bhasha Bhavan, University of Mumbai, Kalina Campus. The event had participation from various colleges from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai region. A session on patriarchy, stereotypes and counselling was held along with skit performance on the topic “Consent”. Our college was invited to perform skit on this occasion. 5 students of our college from B.Sc.I.T. Department along with our faculty Ms. Gurpreet Kaur Khalsa participated in the event. Our students were highly appreciated for their participation.
Women Dvelopment Cell had organised a Seminar on “PCOS Awareness and Education Programme” for girl students in association with Young Concepts India Incorporated, Mumbai on 20th December, 2017. The session was conducted by Dr. Ambuja P. Mahindrakar, an well-known Gynaecologist and Fellow in Reproductive Medicine. Around 80 students participated in the session.
Pillai Group of Institutions hosted One Day Intra-Collegiate Competition for students – Expression 2017 in association with Women Development Cell, University of Mumbai and Majlis, Legal Centre for Women at Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus, New Panvel on 8th December, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students from Pillai College of Arts, Commerce & Science, Pillai College of Architecture, Pillai Institute of Management Studies & Research and Pillai College of Engineering participated in the event. The event started with welcome speech by the Joint Secretary Dr. Daphne Pillai, followed by competition which included two categories of events – verbal and non-verbal. Both the events were conducted simultaneously at two different venues from 11:00 a.m. onwards. The verbal events which included speech, skit and songs saw an overwhelming response of 56 students’ participation was organised in the astro turf area. The non-verbal events included posters and rangoli making where 43 students participated. The non- verbal events were held in two batches from 11:00 a.m. onwards in the architecture studio. The event was graced by the presence of our Joint Secretary Dr. Daphne Pillai and Ms. Ayeshna Dutta, members of Women Development Cell, University of Mumbai. Ms. Aditi Thakkar from Majlis also graced the occasion. The panel of judges included internal judge Mrs. Rasika Patil, artist and a graduate of Fine Arts from J. J. School of Arts, Mumbai and external judge Lawyer Ms. Harshada More. Ms. Snehal Patil from Pillai Institute of Management Studies & Research was the winner and Ms. Progna Bannerjee from Pillai Institute of Management Studies & Research was the runner-up in the verbal category. Mr. Abhijit Prakashan from Pillai College of Engineering and Ms. Vrinda from Pillai College of Arts, Commerce & Science were the winner and runner-up in the non-verbal category. The programme ended with panel discussion by Majlis team members with the students. The active participation of 99 students in verbal and non-verbal events and a team of 6 students and 8 teachers worked together to make the event a grand success.
