Autonomy core committee had organised Workshop on “Autonomy Initiation” on 27th February, 2017 in Auditorium from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Guest speakers were Dr. C. N. Rawal (Principal of BMCC College, Pune) and Dr. A. M. Puranik (Vice-Principal of BMCC College, Pune).
The workshop was organised to augment the staff members with the Autonomy Initiation process within the college. The resource persons highlighted the need, role & responsibilities of teaching and non teaching staff for autonomy initiation in the college.

A One Day State Level Seminar on “Role of Biotechnology in Sustainable Development” was organized by the Department of Biotechnology in association with, Biotechnology Association and Environment Analysis and Conservation team at Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science (PCACS), New Panvel, on 20th February, 2017 (Monday). Two hundred participants comprising students and faculty members from different colleges including PCACS participated in the seminar.
The distinguished guests formally inaugurated the event at 9.30 a.m. by lighting the lamp. Dr. R.I.K. Moorthy, Principal of Pillai College of Engineering welcomed the gathering. Opening remarks were given by Prof. Gopakumar Pillai, Convener of the Seminar. Chief Guest, Dr. Siddhivinayak Barve, Director – Scientific Research Centre, KET’S V.G. Vaze College, Mulund delivered the keynote address on “Sustainable Development Biotechnology”. In his converse, the explained the current environmental issues that the world is facing and how Biotechnology can help solving these issues directing the nation towards Sustainable Development’. His lecture was very interesting, informative and motivating. The technical session on sustainable energy and agriculture started at 11.15 a.m. by Dr. Sandeep Joshi, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, PCE, New Panvel. He delivered the lecture on “Biofuel – Alternate Engine fuel”. He described the potential of biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel as an alternative fuel which can address issues of greenhouse gases, emissions and help in climate change mitigation. The second speaker of the session Dr. Seema Mishra, Director – SIES Indian Institute of Environment Management, Nerul gave the lecture on “Biotechnology in Sustainable Agriculture”. In her talk, she discussed on the development of various biofertilizers and soil fertility improvement strategies to develop effective agriculture. The technical session on Bioenergy and Biodiversity began at 2.15 p.m. following lunch. The session commenced with the lecture of Dr. Shubhalaxmi Vaylure, Founder and CEO, Ladybird Environmental Consultancy LLP, Kharghar. She gave a lecture on “Mobile Applications for recording Urban Biodiversity”. The lecture covered the issues related to usage of the iNaturewatch Mobile apps for climate change studies, engaging students outdoors for environmental studies, and the potential of students as citizen scientists in urban settings. The second speaker for session on Bioenergy was Dr. Annamma Anil Odaneth, Assistant Professor of biochemistry form DBT-ICT Centre for Energy Biosciences, ICT, Matunga. Her lecture was on “Bioenergy production on sustainable development”. She discussed on biomass resources for bioenergy generation and the technologies used for the same, logistics of biomass collection and storage, its impact on biomass resources, economic development and overall dynamics.
The Valedictory session was held at 4.30 p.m. where, Dr. P. S. Goyal, Dean – R & D, PCE gave the concluding remarks emphasizing on the potential of Biotechnology in developing an effective healthcare. The seminar ended with distribution of certificates by Dr. Annamma and Dr. P. S. Goyal followed by Vote of thanks by the Convener, Prof. Gopakumar Pillai.
The students and faculty members were very interactive throughout the lectures. The seminar received a good feedback form the audience. Overall, the seminar was very encouraging and was well appreciated by the guests, students and faculty members.
A Three Day National Workshop on Science Films was held at Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus in New Panvel from 27th to 29th January, 2017. It was jointly organized by Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and Department of Mass Media, Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science.
The workshop aimed at sensitizing students towards science communication through the medium of motion pictures. It also provided students with a hands-on experience in science film making. 60 students from various colleges all over India participated in the workshop.
Veteran Filmmaker and National Award winner, Ms. Arunaraje Patil was the Chief Guest of Honour at the inaugural ceremony. Her documentary on autism ‘Breaking the Glass Wall’ was screened during the opening ceremony.
The sessions were conducted by Dr. C. M. Nautiyal – a renowned scientist and science communicator from Lucknow, Ms. Seema Muralidhara – Television Producer – Director from Mumbai and Mr. Ritesh Taksande – Director from Pune.
Mr. Murzbaan Shroff, author of ‘Breathless in Bombay’ was the guest speaker on the second day of the workshop. He conducted a session on ‘Creating issue based, character based fiction.’
‘We learnt that the movies like Star Wars are not the only way to make science films but there are lot of other topics which should be brought in front of people.’ said Mamta Motwani, a participant. ‘The workshop helped me learn the importance of research, scripting & editing as well as how to use film as a medium to communicate various issues in the society.’ said Saurabh Kekan another participant in the workshop.
Mr. Nimish Kapoor, Head of Science Films’ Division at Vigyan Prasar, praised Pillai College for its excellent infrastructural facilities and coordination provided throughout the workshop. “It was a pleasure to conduct the workshop here. The management, teaching staff and student volunteers were very cooperative.” said Mr. Ritesh Taksande.
There was no fee charged for participating in the workshop. The outstation students were also given a free accommodation by Pillai Collge at their hostel. The participants received a ‘Certificate of Recognition’ at the valedictory ceremony.
The Department of I.T. and C.S. organized a One Day Workshop on “Automated Software Testing” on 1st October, 2016. Resource person for the workshop was Mr. Bishal Bose – Software Test Engineer, L&T Infotech.
The workshop provided a platform to participants to get hands on practice of automated tool in software testing.
The workshop was very informative and thought-provoking. It gave insight on testing and its applications.
Pillai Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PCIE) conducted a Seminar on “Family Managed Business and Entrepreneurship” on 19th August, 2016, Friday. The program was conducted in the Auditorium, 7th Floor. Former B.M.S. student Mr. Jeffin John who is now a successful entrepreneur, Miss. Sabina and Prof. Samish Dalal were the main speakers at
the event. The seminar was very motivating and helped many students get a clear view about what to do differently in their lives.
It made the students realize the importance of family run business and the new and innovative things one can do to expand the family business. Miss. Sabina shared her personal story and experience with the students and stressed that women can always have a better shot at doing business than men. She recalled the problems she had to face, being the only woman in the firm while entering into the family business of mattresses. Prof. Samish Dalal made the students realize that the world, especially India is full of opportunities and one only has to find ‘gaps’ in the market to run a successful business. The program was clearly a huge motivation and helped the students open up their minds to various ideas in taking business to heights.
The Department of Bachelor’s of Science of Information Technology (B.Sc. I.T.) and Bachelor’s of Science of Computer Science (B.Sc. C.S.) of Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science, organised a Seminar based on the topic “Data Analytics” on 12th August, 2016.

Department of Economics in association with University of Mumbai organised One Day Workshop on “Syllabus Revision of F.Y.B.Com. (Semester I & II) & M.Com. (Semester I & II) – Business Economics” on 25th July, 2016.
The Guest of Honour was Dr. Parvathi Venkatesh, Chairperson, Adhoc Board of Studies in Business Economics, University of Mumbai. Former Vice Principal of R. A. Poddar College Prof. Rajam Rajagopalan, Dr. Madhubala Swami and Prof. Shivaji Pawar were the resource persons.
The Workshop received an overwhelming response from the participants of Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg colleges.
The Department of Mass Media (B.M.M.) in association with Board of Studies in Mass Media (B.M.M.), University of Mumbai, organized One Day Workshop on ‘Revised Syllabus and Question Paper Pattern of T.Y.B.M.M. (Semester V)’ Journalism and Advertising on Saturday, 2nd July, 2016. The Chairman of Board of Studies, Mr. Sunder Rajdeep and board of studies members Dr. Navita Kulkarni and Professor Renu Nauriyal graced the occasion as well as addressed the audience. B.M.M. faculty from all over Navi Mumbai as well as Mumbai, participated in the workshop.
IQAC and Faculty Development Cell hosted a One Day Workshop on “Innovative Techniques of Teaching” on 31st March, 2016. It was an inspirational event and a lot of thought provoking ideas were disseminated in the sessions addressed by Mr. Sanjay Rahate, Director, Get Set Go Training Consultancy Private Limited, Brand Consultant for SME Chamber, B.E. in Electrical Engineering, Certified NLP Practioner (U.S.A.), SME in Finance, Certified Yogacharya, Interpersonal Skill and Leadership Development Trainer (U.S.A.), Certified Sports Science and Conditional Fitness from IFA (U.S.A.), Diet and Nutrition Consultant from Nutrilite (U.S.A.), Certified Mind and Memory Trainer, M.B.A. in Business Development. This Workshop was attended by more than 70 participants from different colleges in Mumbai who found it extremely stimulating and full of new ideas.
