The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Pillai college of Arts, Commerce and Science had organised a leprosy education, rehabilitation and treatment campaign jointly with NGO, ALERT-INDIA, on 28th July, 2017.
The NSS unit under the guidance of Prof. Shabab Rizvi, N.S.S. Programme Officer took the initiative to educate pupils by organising the programme which enlightened almost 500 students. The objective of the event was to focus on the causes of leprosy, signs and symptoms and to overcome it by simple and effective treatment.
Donor cards were issued by ALERT-INDIA and the college holds an incredible record in the academic year 2016-2017 by collecting 75,600 INR and donating it to ALERT – INDIA.
As a part of the massive drive launched by the Maharashtra Government to increase the green cover across the State, the N.S.S. volunteers of Pillai College of Arts, Commerce & Science in association with Hariyali NGO organized a one day tree plantation drive on 1st July, 2017. 36 students accompanied by Professors Gurpreet Kaur Khalsa, Prajakta Bapat and Chaitanya Athalye successfully planted 115 saplings on the Shil Phata Mountain (Thane). The students showed great enthusiasm in planting them and they knew their hard work would yield more benefits.
In line with the appeal made by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create awareness among masses on how to use various digital payments modes, and to help Indian Economy to move from Cash Economy to ‘Less Cash Economy’ a session was conducted under N.S.S. Unit for the S.Y.B.Sc. I.T. students on BHIM on 24th June, 2017 by Prof. Rashmi Vagadurgi. It was a step to popularize the use of the app among students and also to educate students about the digital payment system and bring transparency and fairness in financial dealing to build a strong economy.
The N.S.S. Unit of Pillai College of Arts, Commerce & Science observed the Third International Yoga Day on 21st June, 2017. The session was carried under the guidance of a well trained yoga instructor Mr. Ram Palat Yadav, Retd. Lieutenent (Indian Navy) from Jila Prabhari- Patanjali Yog Samiti.
The students were made aware about the importance and benefits of yoga. Around 100 volunteers gathered with the eagerness to gain an insight about how indispensable yoga is. The students were also enlightenment about Yoga asanas. A number of asanas poses were explained in detail and demonstrated by the speaker and volunteers were made to participate. The focus was on how we can improve our lifestyle by incorporating yoga in our day to day activities and acquire physical, mental and spiritual coordination. The event was convened and coordinated by Prof. Shabab Rizvi, N.S.S. Programme Officer.
National Voters Day is celebrated every year on 25th January, 2017 to promote participation in elections and increase voter enrollment, especially of youngsters in the 18 to 19 years age group.
The National Service Scheme unit observed the day to commemorate the foundation day of the Election Commission of India and also to enhance the participation of voters, especially the youth in the democratic process. On this occasion all the students took pledge that they will make optimum utilization of their voting 01 power and encourage others to come forward and contribute in the national interest.

National Service Scheme in association with Ramachandra Mission organized Heartfulness Meditation Session from 23rd to 25th January, 2017. This Heartfulness Meditation is an initiative focused on colleges and administered by Shri Ramachandra Mission, a nonprofit organization. During the session the volunteers of the organization introduced Heartfulness relaxation and Sahag Marg meditation system – simple technique of relaxation and meditation – to all the students. The 3 day programme was conducted class wise, guided meditation for few minutes followed by an interactive session with the students on their experience.
As directed by the University of Mumbai the N.S.S. Unit celebrated the Youth Week from 12th to 16th January, 2017 dedicating to Swami Vivekanand’s Birth Day celebration, observing the theme “Youth for Digitization and Cashless Society”. Following were the activities carried during the week:
A lecture was organized to sensitize students about digital banking systems so that the awareness about cashless transactions can trickle down to the grassroots level. A poster exhibition was also organized for the same.
Following the theme a campaign was conducted at Raigad Bazaar for the vendors on 23rd December, 2017. The vendors showed great interest in trying to understand the cashless transaction at a minimal level also. Some of the NSS volunteers spoke at an individual level in making the people understand the value of e-transactions and benefits of digital economy.
