One Day National Seminar-cum-Workshop on “Academic Integrity and Reference Management Tools” was organized by Learning Resource Centre (Library) of Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science (Autonomous), New Panvel in association with Indian Library Association, New Delhi and University of Mumbai on 24th August, 2019.
The seminar aimed to create awareness about the consequences of Academic Misconduct and Plagiarism among the students, research scholars and faculty members. In addition to it, the seminar conducted a workshop on how to manage references and bibliographies while conducting research activity. About 100 participants were in the seminar.
Dr. Sanjay B. Munavalli, Organizing Secretary of the event while introducing the seminar said that plagiarism is an issue that all universities and colleges must need to be addressed. If the higher education institutions does not take steps to address the gravity of this situation it risks damaging its reputation. It is crucial for a higher education institution to establish a culture in which academic integrity is at the forefront of its mission. Vice-Principal, Mrs. Deepika Sharma in her inaugural address, highlighted the aim of this unique seminar. She said that Promotion of academic integrity to save and restore the individual, institutional as well as national intellectual health is the need of the hour. Sessions on research ethics, promotion of academic integrity and preventions of plagiarism, lighter side of library management and search beyond Google and Reference Management Using Zotero were presented by the experts invited from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Indira Gandhi Institute of development Research, Mumbai and SRTM, University, Nanded.
The first session on Research Ethics was conducted by Prof. Anil S. Sutar and highlighted that proper research methodology should be adopted by researchers while doing their research work to avoid academic misconduct.
Dr. Ananad Dodamani conducted session and shared his views on ‘Promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism’ and highlighted the University Grants Commission (UGC) (Promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism in Higher Education Regulations, 2018) .
Shri. Ranjeet Dhrmapurikar, Information Scientist, SRTM University, Nanded presented a cartoon show on the theme ‘Lighter Side of Library Management’ and shared his views on changing nature of reading habits in digital world.
During the post lunch session, Dr. S. M. Pujar, Chief Librarian, IGIDR, Mumbai conducted a session on ‘Search Beyond Google’ and conducted live demo on how to manage references using Zotero open source reference management tool. During Valedictory Session, report of the seminar was presented by Organizing Secretary, Dr. Sanjay B. Munavalli which was followed by feedback from the participants. Organinzing Committee Member Dr. Seema Somani proposed a vote of thanks.
